Mackenzie's Mountain by Linda Howard

Yes, I have FINALLY read a Linda Howard book. Oh, and I guess this counts as another TBR Challenge book.

Hmm...do I really need a synopsis? I'm probably the last romance reader on earth to read this.

A small Wyoming town is about to learn a few lessons — from a new schoolteacher with the courage to win the heart of a man who swore he had nothing to give....

Mary Elizabeth Potter is a self-appointed spinster with no illusions about love. But she is a good teacher — and she wants Wolf Mackenzie’s son back in school. And after one heated confrontation with the boy’s father, she knows father and son have changed her life forever.

Still paying for a crime he didn’t commit, Wolf Mackenzie has a chip on his shoulder the size of Wyoming. But prim-and-proper Mary Elizabeth Potter doesn’t see Wolf as the dangerous half-breed the town has branded him. Somehow she sees him as a good, decent, honest man. A man who could love...

Wolf’s not sure he — or the town of Ruth, Wyoming — is ready for the taming of Wolf Mackenzie.

You know, I actually rather liked this story. I didn't think I would. Now I wouldn't call myself an instant Linda Howard fangirl and I won't be gung ho about reading all her books, but I will try to read the rest of the Mackenzie books. Mary was a bit too silly for my tastes, but I did enjoy the romance here. I did figure out who it was right away and thought it all rather obvious, but the mystery was still fairly interesting.

I've never read this either. I'll have to give it a try.

Me either, so there are at least two romance readers on earth who haven't read it!

This was never one of my favourite Howards. It's ok - but nothing that stands out for me. Now if you want to talk about great Howard books - I bet you would really like either Mr. Perfect of To Die For or my personal favourite - After the Night. Try one of those and I'm willing to bet you might become a fan girl :)

Well, I have To Die For.

Cover of Night is coming soon from the library.

Geesh, am I the ONLY one who liked Wolf? I adored Joe's Story and Chance was OK but not great. That premise was a little hard to swallow. But Joe? I liked Joe.
I had read them about five years ago and just re-read them. They were repackaged as duel books in one. So it was a condensed reading extravaganza for me.
I think I liked Zane the best though. That one was the grittiest and most fulfilling.
So, I'll vote for hoping you'll like Zane's story the best.

I some how missed this post and saw your post over at Angie's. Mary and Wolf are two of my favorite characters, though I do understand why you think she's silly. I love this book, I reread recently and it's still a favorite.

I love Wolf and Mary too, and have read this book several times over the years.

I also thought Joe's and Zane's stories were great, Chance was good but Maris's story was only okay.

Mackenzie's Mountain and Son of the Morning are my two favorite Linda Howard books.

One thing to keep in mind when reading Mackenzie's Mountain is that is was written 17yrs ago and the romance genre had changed greatly since then.

I'm with Kristie, I thought it was an ok book, but nowhere near her best. I'd recommend Cry No More first of all, and also Mr. Perfect, After the Night (I agree with Kristie there, too) and Dream Man.
